“There is no love sincerer than the love of food.” – George Bernard Shaw
How do you spend your lunch break? Most engineers grab a quick bite at a corner café, or maybe skip lunch altogether since they have “too much on their plate.” Packing a lunch is a great way to save time and money, and keep track of exactly what goes into your food.
The Food Network offers seven great tips for packing your lunch:
- Plan ahead, cook big batches
- Pack foods that reheat well
- Pack foods that can be eaten cold
- Say no to sogginess
- Pack filling dishes
- Leftovers are your friend
- Utilize some prepared foods
According to CBS News article, The bad eating habits that are killing the most Americans, the “bad” foods most commonly overeaten in this country are salt and salty foods; processed meats including bacon, bologna and hot dogs; red meat including steaks and hamburgers; and sugary drinks. These eating habits caused about 700,000 deaths from heart disease, strokes and diabetes in 2012.
The results, based on U.S. government data, found that these “good” foods were the most likely to be under-eaten: nuts and seeds, seafood rich in omega-3 fats including salmon and sardines; fruits and vegetables; and whole grains.
This information may seem redundant, but that does not change the fact that obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol are taking lives daily in the United States. Most people, despite knowing that their diet is dangerous, have yet to find an alternative that fits with their lifestyle.
Eatingwell.com offers a variety of healthy, easy, and budget friendly recipes for individuals and families who are seeking change.
Here are three apps you can download from the app store on your mobile device that make grocery shopping and meal planning easy for all engineers: MealPlan, AnyList, and MealBoard.
Science Times contributing writer, Carlo Rodriguez, also shared five foods that help keep your brain sharp and focused in his February 2017 article:
- Broccoli is rich in Vitamin K which is responsible for the enhancement of cognitive function and improves a person’s brain power.
- Glucose serves as the brain’s fuel source and it can be processed by the body through the sugars and the carbohydrates that one consumes.
- Fish is the ultimate brain food because it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and helps boost the brain and lower the risk of dementia and mental decline.
- Nuts contain a lot of vitamin E which helps people avoid mental decline as they age. They are a great snack to enjoy throughout the work day.
- Dark chocolate is a good source of powerful antioxidants and brain stimulants which also include caffeine.
- The bottom line is that staying healthy benefits both employees and employers in many ways: fewer missed workdays, greater productivity and less stress.
